CBCA Book of the Year – Younger Readers

I have had the pleasure of reading all short listed titles in the Younger Reader Category of the CBCA’s Childrens Book of the Year Award and have been delighted by each and every title.  All have a place in our secondary collection and each one has something quite special about it. Interestingly, three of the titles are set in World War 2 including  Sonya Hartnett’s The Children of the King.  This multi-layered and beautifully written novel draws on the rich history of England to establish an intriguing and satisfying story.  Once again Sonya proves why she is one this country’s leading authors.  Also set in WW2 is Pennies for Hitler by Jackie French.  Jackie knows how to tell a story and I think this is one of her best.  I invested much emotion into the reading and found myself caring very deeply for all the beautifully realised characters.  The other title in my top three is Glenda Millard’s The Tender Moments of Saffron Silk.  Glenda continues her Kingdom of Silk series with this little beauty.  Extraordinary how she manages so much story in just over 100 pages.  The Silk Family are worth meeting if you have not read any titles in this series.  For more information of the CBCA short list check out their websiteChildren of the King cover

Bookclub may 22

Our Loreto Book club met today instead of last week as I was away at a conference.  We had a smaller than usual group because of this but we did have fun  making avatars using Clayourself.  I then used an app (Perfect Image) on my ipad to create a collage of Erin, Rachel, Karina, Bianca, Anna and Emily.   We did leave some time for talking about books and seeing what is new in the Library which is always fun as sometimes all girls want to borrow the same book!   We have decided next meeting to select a book from one of our class sets and all read  it and review when we meet next.  What will we choose?

Congratulations Allyse Near!

We are very excited at Loreto College to hear that one of our recent students is about to have her first book released in early June. Allyse Near (at Loreto Ballarat from 2002 – 2007) has written “Fairytales for Wilde Girls” described by her publisher Random House as ” A deliciously dark bubblegum-gothic fairytale from a stunning new Australian talent”

Congratulations Allyse on this your first book.  May there be many more to follow.

Anzac Day 2013

Thank you to Mrs O’Keefe for preparing our 2013 Anzac Day display.  The music accompanying the photos is The Last Post played by Corporal Matthew Creek of the Royal Military College Band  at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. The Last Post is one of a number of bugle calls in military tradition that mark the phases of the day. In military tradition, the Last Post is the bugle call that signifies the end of the day’s activities. It is also sounded at military funerals to indicate that the soldier has gone to his final rest and at commemorative services such as ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. The music and information can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Pz5KsyfN0

Introducing Miss Corbett!

We were very sad at the end of last term to farewell one of our Library team members, Mrs McGregor, after many years of dedicated service to Loreto and to our Library.  We will miss her very much but wish her all the very best as she embarks on new ventures.

As a result of Mrs McGregor’s departure we have a new Library staff member, Miss Corbett, and we welcome her warmly to the Loreto College Library.   Miss Corbett is an avid reader and loves to chat to students about books so call in and say hello and strike up a conversation!

On the Same Page Book Club

Our final meeting for the term was today at lunch time and it is amazing how much noise a small group of 7 can generate!  After discussing current reading, new books and looked at some recently weeded treasures we set about writing a story based on the picture book by Remy Charlip,  Fortunately.  The noise level went up a notch but we did have enormous fun.  Thanks girls for making my day.  You are my rays of sunshine.

It has been suggested we meet fortnightly instead of monthly (thanks Rachel), this seems a very good idea.
